You could see that the light had left her eyes
so many years before
dragged through the gutter as a fighting single mother
the odds were stacked against her from the start

When the State came in and took her kid away
She felt there was no way out
She didn't leave a note, put the noose around her throat
as she kicked the stool to the ground

If anybody ever showed they cared
the ending to the story could be different
maybe she would find
what she lacked for lay inside all along
If she had ever heard an encouraging word
or a little piece of advice
maybe she would be alive

Her kid grew up without a home
no one to show him the direction
he hit the bottle young and was always on the run
from the stigma attached to his name

When the State came in and gave him twenty-five
with no intent of rehabilitation
He didn't leave a note, put the noose around his throat
